New and exciting!
Take a guided sightseeing tour of Lexington on the Liberty Ride

Lexington, Massachusetts
America's Birthplace

Thank you for your interest in the Lexington area, the place where the American Revolution began on April 19, 1775 along the Battle Road.  We hope this site will assist you in your trip or vacation planning.  Be sure to remember to see us at the Visitors Center located just off the Lexington Green adjacent to the Minuteman Statue.  We have an information center and small gift shop for souvenirs and other seasonal items.  Also on display is a diorama of the Battle of Lexington.

HALF DAY TOUR
Begin your tour of Lexington at the Vistors Center. While there, view the Diorama of the Battle of Lexington and pick up brochures and directions to area attractions. From the Visitors Center, it's a short walk to the Minuteman Statue on the Battle Green. Visit the monument on the Green as well as the Old Belfrey on Belfrey Hill and the Old Burying Ground. Go back in time with guided tours of three of Lexington's historic homes -- Munroe Tavern*, Buckman Tavern* and the Hancock-Clarke House*. Save time for shopping in Lexington Center and for a leisurely lunch or dinner in one of Lexington's fine restaurants.

Option for 1/2 day Tour
Instead of tours of the historic homes, Buckman Tavern , and the Hancock-Clarke* House, visit the National Heritage Museum. Changing exhibits at the Museum focus on the varying aspects of the growth and development of the United States. Be sure to see the film, "Lexington Alarm'd" which depicts what life was like in the small town where the Revolutionary War began. Free admission, open year-round.

FULL DAY TOUR
If you have a full day to spend in Lexington, use the morning to complete the itinerary suggested in the half day tour.  In the afternoon, travel towards East Lexington and tour Munroe Tavern* and its Colonial Garden (house tours by arrangement with the Historical Society).  "Lexington Alarm 'd", the National Heritage Museum's permanent exhibit, focuses on the American Revolution, while four other galleries focus on varying aspects of our American heritage.  Finish your afternoon with a tour of Wilson Farms (by arrangement), or walk the nature and fitness trail at the Center Field on Worthen Rd.

Options for full day tour
A. Stop at the Visitors Center to view the diorama, then spend some of your day on one of three self-guided walking tours -- Lexington Center, Munroe Trail, East Lexington -- which will take you through the history and development of Lexington from the Revolution to the present.

B. For the morning, follow the itinerary for the 1/2 day tour.  For the afternoon, walk the nature and fitness trail at Fiske Hill, then stop at Minuteman National Historic Park's  Battle Road Visitors Center to view the film "To Keep Our Liberty".  Plan to stay for the Ranger led "Who Were the People?" and learn about living in colonial America.  You will meet a colonial woman, a British soldier, or an American Minute Man.

* Historic houses open seasonally; closed off season from mid-November to early April; however group tours can be arranged by appointment. Please call the Lexington Historical Society for hours of operation at 781.862.1703 or for more information visit the Lexington Historical Society at www.lexingtonhistory.org.
